Kurzvita
Leif Weatherby is an Associate Professor of German at New York University, where I write and teach about the digital, Romanticism and Idealism, and political economy. I’m also the co-founder of the Digital Theory Lab.
My first book, Transplanting the Metaphysical Organ: German Romanticism between Leibniz and Marx (Fordham, 2016), argues that German Romanticism established a technological metaphysics centered on the neologism “organ,” which meant both tool and function.
My current projects include a short book, co-authored with Matthew Handelman, called Digital Judgment, and The Empire of Redundancy, or How Cybernetics Encountered German Idealism, which tells the story of the digital revolution as a philosophical movement.
My writing has appeared in places like the Los Angeles Review of Books, Grey Room, The Hedgehog Review, and Cabinet. Recently, together with Jeffrey Kirkwood, I co-edited the first English edition of Ernst Kapp’s 1877 Elements of a Philosophy of Technology, the first book to use its title phrase.
